چکیده

Purpose: We investigated lexical representations of children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing chronological age-matched (CA) peers on a frequency manipulated gating task. We tested the hypothesis that children with SLI have holistic phonological representations of words, i.e. that children with SLI would exhibit smaller effects of neighborhood density on gating durations than CA peers, and that children with SLI would be as efficient as CA peers in accessing high frequency words, but that they would differ from their age matched peers in accessing words low frequency words. Method: Thirty-two children (ages 8;5-12;3) participated, 16 children with SLI and 16 typically developing peers matched on age and nonverbal IQ. Children’s word guesses after different gating durations were investigated. Results: Contrary to predictions, we found no group differences in effects of distributional regularity: children in both groups required equally longer acoustic chunks to access words that were low in frequency and came from dense neighborhoods. Instead, children with SLI appeared to vacillate between multiple word candidates at significantly later gates when compared to children in the CA group. Conclusions: Children with SLI did not exhibit evidence for phonologically holistic lexical representations. Instead, they appeared more vulnerable to competing words.

Phonological representation of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI).

BACKGROUND children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) have difficulties with speech processing. These difficulties affect the development of phonologic representations. AIM to evaluate the abilities of children with normal language development (NLD) and those with SLI in distinguishing words from non-words in a lexical decision task. METHOD two groups were involved in this study: the ...

Lexical conflict resolution in children with specific language impairment.

The aim of our study is to examine the effect of conflict on naming latencies in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing (TD) children and to explore whether deficits in conflict resolution contribute to lexical problems in SLI. In light of previous results showing difficulties with inhibitory functions in SLI, we expected higher semantic conflict effect in the...

The impact of lexical frequency on sentence comprehension in children with specific language impairment.

Children with SLI generally exhibit poor sentence comprehension skills. We examined the specific impact of grammatical complexity and lexical frequency on comprehension performance, yielding contrasting results. The present study sheds new light on sentence comprehension in children with SLI by investigating a linguistic factor which has attracted little research interest: the impact of the lex...

Binding theory and grammatical specific language impairment in children.

This study investigates the intrasentential assignment of reference to pronouns (him, her) and anaphors (himself, herself) as characterized by Binding Theory in a subgroup of "Grammatical specifically language-impaired" (SLI) children. The study aims to (1) provide further insight into the underlying nature of Grammatical SLI in children and (2) elucidate the relationship between different sour...

Nonword Repetition Problems in Children With SLI

Children with specific language impairment (SLI) consistently show poor nonword repetition (NWR) performance. However, the reason for these difficulties remains a matter of intensive debate. Nonword repetition is a complex psycholinguistic task that heavily relies upon phonological segmentation and phonological knowledge, and even lexical knowledge. This study aims at investigating various ling...
